Civil engineering sector
A large multi-national civil engineering company was tendering for several related large (several £100m) construction projects in the centre of London.
They assembled a bid team assuming that their client would want to be confident of their methodology and provided several subject matter experts to help write the technical aspects of the bid.
We analysed the ITT and helped them realise that the client was actually asking detailed questions about how they intended to mitigate the risks of traffic disruption, damage to listed buildings, damage to neighbourhood businesses and resident relationships.
Fundamentally the client’s ITT required a demonstration of how the construction company was going to protect the project’s reputation and avoid being a front page story in the Evening Standard.
Our team coached the subject matter experts, made them think about the client’s real issues and helped them develop and write a proposal which met the client’s needs.

Rail sector
A multi-national rail engineering company was bidding to build new rolling stock for a rail operator.
The engineering team were focused on describing every technical detail of their solution because they were convinced that the client wanted to know the engineering details.
We analysed the ITT and convinced the bid team that their proposal needed to focus on demonstrating and proving the benefits that their train would deliver in terms of low through life costs, due to high reliability and ease of maintenance as well as providing a good passenger experience.
In one example, we persuaded the engineering team that the client did not need to know how the door system worked, but they did need to understand that choosing the most capital expensive door option delivered long term benefits in terms of smoother aerodynamic airflow leading to lower vibration, lower dust and water ingress, lower noise and therefore lower long term maintenance costs.

Engineering sector
A major engineering company was bidding to provide design and assurance consultancy services to a client when it had traditionally provided build, installation, test and commissioning services based on other companies designs, i.e. it wanted to extend its portfolio into a new functional area.
We helped them write a detailed proposal that demonstrated, and provided evidence, that they had design experience based on their ability to develop outline concept designs provided by other companies into detailed designs fit for delivery.
We helped them show that their project delivery experience meant that they were able to “design for safety, design for delivery and design for maintainability” and that this would provide enhanced designs at the concept stage.
We also helped them show how they provided assurance that their detailed design work met the required standards and was verified and validated against client requirements.
We were able to show that this also enabled them to critically examine designs provided by others and provide external assurance that these designs met requirements.
